BallotReady: Voter Registration

Designing for civic engagement is complex, with challenges concerning user behavior and motivation, data gathering, and shifting state policies. As Lead UX and Product Designer at BallotReady, my mission is to sort through this complexity to design experiences that enable users to make the best decisions around their civic participation, and engage with our data effectively.

In this role I support both internal and external tools — designing new processes and interfaces for our research and data teams and our customers, strategically redesigning our existing tools, and crafting usable experiences for our web application’s end users.

Competitor Analysis

There are a lot of political organizations and state websites that have voter registration processes. I clicked through dozens of workflows to understand how different tools address the complexities of designing for users across the country.

Usability Audit

I ran a usability audit of our current tool, which is part of a larger system of civic tools in our product line. I wanted to discover how the voter registration tool fits in with our larger ecosystem, how a redesign of this piece would affect everything else, and the specific usability challenges that we’d need to redesign in addition to restructuring the workflow.

I designed a comprehensive audit document using Airtable, and created categories based on Neilsen Norman Group’s 10 usability heuristics

User Research

I designed a user research study that enabled us to assess what was working in our tools already, and where we could improve. I synthesized the results and built a strategic design plan around them — taking into consideration our roadmap timelines and engineering capacity.

Design Challenges

Working with state APIs to design a form that is user friendly while still capturing all the necessary information to ensure a successful online registration request

Multiple workflows — depending on their state, users can choose to register to vote online, via mail, or in person. Each channel has varying deadlines and eligibility rules. Additionally, we provide custom services (e.g. printing and mailing a pre-stamped envelope OR letting users download and print registration forms themselves), which require distinct user processes

Information Density — figuring out how to display all the relevant information (there’s a lot) without overwhelming users, on different screen sizes

Collaborating across teams — data strategy, engineering, customer success and research

Ensuring the experience kept as much consistency as possible between web and mobile

Initial Sketches

I got some ideas down as a first step before setting up a design studio with our internal stakeholders. This gave us a visual place to start thinking about how to organize the user experience, and where in our database the information would need to connect to.

Wireframes -> Mockups

I designed the user experience for both web and mobile, then worked with our UI designer to create high-fidelity mocks to hand off to engineering.

Zift: Channel Marketing Tools

As the sole designer on the team, my role was multifaceted. I led design processes along with our product manager, created and facilitated design research, and pitched design goals to high-level internal and external stakeholders.

The team was entirely development led, so I pushed for a more design-first approach to the work which resulted in fewer iterations of feature pushes as customers were more involved in the process from the beginning.

I produced sketches, wireframes, as well as mid- to high-fidelity mockups and worked closely with the development team to implement my designs. I also created a design system and UI library as the company went through a rebranding process.

Information Architecture

I mapped out our channel marketing tool's functionality, highlighting where we needed additional data, and where new features should go.

UI/X Design

I designed the customer facing experience for our B2B tool based on research I conducted with stakeholders.

Style Guide

I created a comprehensive style guide that organized visual assets and set us up for consistency across our tools.
